Diabetic Diagnostic Market Needs Analysis in Indonesia
Inspiry27 Maret 2023
DM Type I, II, and Prediabetes –International Diabetes Federation (IDF) confirms that diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the 21st century. In 2019, more than half a billion people worldwide had diabetes which may reach up to 783 million by 2045. It showed higher than 1.2 million people have type 1 diabetes, though 54% are under the age of 15. An estimated 240 million people are living with undiagnosed diabetes, meaning nearly one in two adults with diabetes are unaware that they have diabetes. Amount of 90% of diabetic patients lives in low and middle-income countries. In Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific, more than half of people with diabetes are undiagnosed.
Prevalence of Diabetes in Indonesia
Indonesia is the 5th country with the highest prevalence of diabetes, and forecast to be 28.6 million in 2045. The high prevalence of diabetes makes early detection of diabetes and drug development required in managing diabetes and preventing complications. The longer a person remains undiagnosed, the greater the risk of complications. Undiagnosed diabetes is defined when the blood glucose levels are classified as diabetic but are not confirmed yet by the doctor.
Diabetes Diagnostic Procedure Segment
There are various blood glucose tests, including the following:
1. HbA1C Test: The HbA1C test measures the average blood sugar level over the last 2 or 3 months. HbA1C below 5.7% means blood sugar is in the normal range, HbA1C 5.7 - 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
2. Fasting Blood Sugar Test: After an overnight fast (no food), the test will start. Fasting blood sugar level <=99 mg/dL is normal, 100 - 125 mg/dL indicates prediabetes, and >=126 mg/dL indicates diabetes.
3. Glucose Tolerance Test: It measures blood sugar before and after drinking glucose-containing fluids. The procedure begins with fasting then blood is taken to determine fasting blood sugar levels. Then the patient will drink glucose liquid and check blood sugar levels every 1 hour, 2 hours, and maybe 3 hours after. At 2 hours, a blood sugar level <= 140 mg/dL is considered normal, 140 - 199 mg/dL indicates prediabetes, and >= 200 mg/dL indicates you have diabetes.
4. Random Blood Sugar Test: It measures blood sugar at any time. A blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL or more indicates diabetes.
Opportunity and Competition
Of the four diagnostic tests, HbA1c is considered the most accurate in assessing the status of diabetes, including the effectiveness of treatment. The global HbA1c testing devices market size is valued at USD 1.436 billion in 2020 and may reach a valuation of USD 2.092 billion by 2026 with a CAGR of 9.9% during the forecast period. Here are some of the largest manufacturing companies in Indonesia that produce blood HbA1C tests including Roche, Thermo Fisher, Abbott, Biorad, Sysmex, and Siemens.
The increasing use of diabetes management devices and technological developments will create demand for testing devices. The rise of diabetes prevalence and awareness about diabetes treatments will increase the demand for testing devices. Research and development activities regarding diagnostic methods will drive market growth. Portability is one of the determining factors as it is convenient for the end user. The bench-top category in the market is predicted to grow with various technological innovations in medical devices. However, market development is not only the consequence of diabetes growth prevalence in Indonesia. Low awareness of diabetes may hinder market development.
